Westports – Soaring To Greater Heights

 
Strategically located along the world’s busiest shipping lanes – The Straits of Malacca, Westports Malaysia is a gateway to South East Asia’s booming market with a global connectivity to 300 ports. 

Spanning 546 hectres on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia on Pulau Indah, Westports constitutes one half of Port Klang’s 2 terminals, operating nine container berths with a quayline of 3.2 kilometers, capable of accommodating five mother vessels and five feeder vessels. This natural deep-water port with a minimum 16-meter draft aims to become a successful national cargo gateway and a regional hub.

Productivity

Westports is among the world’s top 5 in productivity. Consistently rated as one of the world’s most productive ports, Westports surpasses its productivity records by raising its own performance bar year on year. Westports delivers average crane productivity of 35 gross moves per hour and over the vessel productivity of above 100 gross moves per hour with minimum 3 cranes operation.  

Today, 31 Main Line Operators and 36 Feeders call on the port including CMA-CGM, China Shipping Container Lines, Goldstar, CSAV Norasia, Delmas, Evergreen Marine, APL, MSC Shipping and Hanjin.

Facilities

Westports facilities comprises of both container and conventional terminals. It also provides value added services such as a vehicle terminal, On Dock Depot, Distripark and Container Freight Stations. 

Volume Growth

Container throughput at Westports has increased from 2.6 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in 2004 to 4.3 million TEUs in 2007. The port aims to bring throughput up to 5 million TEUs in 2008. Westports commands 63 per cent share of the container volume in Port Klang.

Expansion

Westports has commenced a RM800 million-expansion plan over a 3-year period, starting 2007, to boost the number of berths and increase container-handling facilities.  
 
The first-year expansion plan includes a 600-meter expansion of its current 2,600m berth length, which will be completed in October 2008.  

Additionally, Westports has received 6 new Super Post-Panamax quay cranes (all twin-lifts), bringing the total number to 31. Westports will have a total of 34 Quay Cranes, including 12 twin lift cranes, 102 Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes, 264 Prime Movers, 296 Trailers, 11 Reach Stackers and 14 MT Stackers by end 2008.
